I would like to know where to download a free, easy-to-use ripper to take MY music from CDs that I own and save them as MP3 files of good quality.
(I'm not offering them anywhere but my family's iPods - I just loathe the proprietariness of iTunes and others).

|Out last night
Needed adult company. Hung out with Joe H. at Boca, then went to Shelter - both were quieter than in months past. Expect everyone's out enjoying the springtime pursuits instead of clubbing. Saw lots of friends and was oddly non-conversational given that I went out to talk to people. Clarice was celebrating her doctoritude.
Out of downtown, Del Taco, to bed.
Go get Sprog now (my beloved daughter Elaine will need therapy for what we call her - It, Sprog, Problem Child, Laneymonster).
Too much time alone in my own head - but it's good for getting things done around here...
you'd think I knew *nobody* at TribalFest, as little as I've heard about it.

Sorry about Buffalo, ETCET. Was it that they took Ottawa for granted, or just were too tired, or reading their own press, or what?
Best of three for Anaheim and Detroit. Any bets?
|Keep a geezer company...
I'm out tonight - CO folks, please come out tonight and see a pathetic wretch - I have no Maggie and and no adult company for days.
Guaranteed to be chatty...

|These are a few of my favorite things...
Cigars, sushi, Scotch and Sprog.
There are worse ways to spend a Friday evening.
A wifeless Friday evening, since she was kidnapped by shimmy-vixens to the Bay Area, to cavort and swill wine and swap clothing and have pillow-fights in lingerie and such...
While I selflessly work in the baking Colorado sun all day...uphill, both ways.
Seriously, She's having a blast and this makes room for my hedonistic girlchasers weekend in some yet-to-be-named den of depravity...

|What we're up against.
This was published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on 15 April 2007, and that its author, Connie Meskimen, is a lawyer in Little Rock, AR.
You may have noticed that March of this year was particularly hot. As a matter of fact, I understand that it was the hottest March since the beginning of the last century. All of the trees were fully leafed out and legions of bugs and snakes were crawling around during a time in Arkansas when, on a normal year, we might see a snowflake or two. This should come as no surprise to any reasonable person. As you know, Daylight Saving Time started almost a month early this year. You would think that members of Congress would have considered the warming effect that an extra hour of daylight would have on our climate. Or did they ?
Perhaps this is another plot by a liberal Congress to make us believe that global warming is a real threat. Perhaps next time there should be serious studies performed before Congress passes laws with such far-reaching effects.

|Hockey geeking - round 2
Somebody help me see this - most sportswriters are giving the series to the Sharks - I don't see them overwhelming Detroit in the Second Season.
Buffalo, Anaheim, I say NJ...any takers?

|Rather than focus on the message..
(that picking on kids WILL cause the random one to go postal STS), let's ignore it and endorse the status quo. Popular kids, rich kids can pick on whoever they want, the other 90% of the school is there for their pleasure. Any conflict with these sainted ones, blessed by fortune with looks, social skills, money, or athletic ability - and the school sides with them regardless.
Oh, and let's all act surprised again when it happens next time, OK? That way we don't hafta change anything, the media can bury us in irrelevancies again, and we can ignore the not-war that loses more than that many in an afternoon.
Hmmmm...similar age, just not monied enough to attend college - are we mourning them because they are more the ideal/idealized kids we wish we had or were, whereas the grunts dying for the idiot usurping the nation's government aren't as worthy because they didn't have money or smarts and took the best choice they had...?
How can anyone not loathe the apathy of this country? We let mass media jerk our little tears from their ducts, allow ourselves to be distracted from good responsible governance by the likes of American Idol and Amazing Race and Survivor, and hold pretty and rich to be ideals when we don't even *like* most people we know blessed by either of those qualities? When Paris Hilton is even known by anyone outside of Manhattan, this culture's pretty f**ked up.

In the local goth scene, Dresden Dolls' "Coin Operated Boy" is getting regular rotation.
To refresh your memory, the bridge goes
"will you persist even after i bet you
a billion dollars that i'll never love you
will you persist even after i kiss you
goodbye for the last time
will you keep on trying to prove it?"
The implication is that the singer wants him to, wants the unknown suitor to persist.
Um...that's called "stalking", and the same women dancing to the song are heard to braggingly bemoan their stalker-o'-the-month.
And y'all wonder why men are confused...

When is "supporting the troops" going to become synonymous with "keep them alive" or "take decent care of them"? And when are the yokels who reflexively vote Repub gonna actually realize this administration is worse to those noble patriotic veterans and their families than Carter or Clinton ever were?

- because it's still got an effect
Got the mental equivalent of a thousand-yard stare - out last night with Elusis, Traveler, and a friend named Joe. Had pizza and conversation at Elusis' place afterward, then got home 4ish (5ish after change). Woke today, got Sprog, went back to bed while Maggledy went to BD practice for Sat show. Woke up, realized my dream of the Avs losing the tie game they maintained into the 3rd (when I went to bed) was real. Surfed, blinked a lot, trying to get the gumption to do something today - god knows what, but something.

Working on my Psych101 and Psych102 online courses. Test by midnight tonight on 2 chapters, realize AFTER spending ~10 hours on one chapter that my text is a different version of the book than the class is using (same edition, somehow different pagination, definitely different chaptering). SO that chapter isn't being handled for a few weeks, AND I get to read/notetake/review 2 chapters the first of which I'd just started on Thurs. Now I'm 1/2way through the second chapter, gonna read it and take some trial tests. It's over psych stuff I've peripherally known for years - the blessing of 101/102 classes is it's somewhat reviewy for anyone interested in the field. Then I'll bite the bullet and take the tests closed-book and closed-notes and accept what grade I get.
It's been too damned long since I've studented.
I have classmates as young as 17 - double-dipping from local high schools. Yikes - I was just as naive and wrong then, I am certain - I'm just so many lives past being that person that it's painful to read their thoughts and lives.
Went out last night with Maggie after hitting the "brain is full" stage of studying. BOCA was fun, I was in one of those push-peoples-boundaries moods, fortunately didn't get in trouble (that I recall) with friends or the venue.
Went with Elusis and Keli to Keli-and-Schmid-E's house for hot-tubbing. Relaxed with their hospitality and then went home. Felt like I couldn't make my brain engage in more than superfluous fluff conversation - I miss actual make-you-think discussions, and Elusis and Keli are foremost in the local scene as minds I like sparring with to figure out what I think - refreshing perspectives and quick wits. But I could not make my brain engage - schoolwork obviously is overtaxing something - to the better, I know, but I miss interacting in more than the pleasantries and chitchat level.
(Of course Maggledy is always my primary discussion partner - we're rushing up on 15 years together. I don't mean to dismiss her from "discussion", but she's in her own category, as of course my spouse presumably should be)
Sunday morning - woke after 5h sleep, hitting the books again. I need about 1-2h/day study and notetaking and online discussioning and testing 7 days a week to get the grade I expect. It'll be interesting to see if I can stay on this horse on top of work, home, family, social, etc.
